The garden at the Welcome Centre becomes a home to raised beds to grow vegetables for the kitchen!
In April this year in conjunction with our sister project Prospect & the Redbridge Institute of Adult Education, we started a growing project in our garden using raised beds. With the help of Jamie our tutor from (RIAE) the clients constructed the raised beds working together using their carpentry skills.
They then planted from seed, a range of vegetables from radishes, tomatoes, runner beans, pumpkins, potatoes, spinach, leeks, lettuces and a variety of different herbs.
Within weeks the crops took off, clients watered and tended to the beds and we began using the vegetables in the kitchen. The beauty of this growing project is that the clients work together to produce a healthy crop of organic vegetables, the garden looks great and the entire project of community growing is also good for the environment. The added bonus is that everyone gets to eat the freshly picked vegetables in their lunch!
The Prospects Monday cooking class also made jars of pickled radishes.
