Horticulture and Allotment Gardening
One of the activities organised for the clients of the Prospects Project is gardening, these weekly sessions are led by Judi Samuels who teaches the group beginners level horticulture. The group’s aim is to bring back to life a previously neglected allotment at Loxford Lane and grow fruit, vegetables and flowers.
Since starting the gardening sessions in November 2012 the group has grown in size and participants enjoy a combination of both classroom based learning and practical tasks working outside. Visits to the allotment has been challenging during the winter months, but now spring has arrived group members are keen to get on with the important maintenance and preparation jobs for creating a productive allotment.
The gardening project was very kindly gifted seeds from individuals who responded to a plea for seed donations and we have been overwhelmed by the very generous response. The Welcome Centre letterbox was flooded with large envelopes full of packets of seeds, giving us a great start. Among the seeds sown are Jalapeno Peppers, Tomatoes, Lettuce, Aubergines and Spring Onions. Our aim is to harvest the fruits of our labour and offer them up to the kitchen at the Welcome Centre for cooking and sharing with all.
We were also gifted a large amount of weed control membrane which enabled us to cover the ground whilst digging over the soil bit by bit. This contribution has been invaluable as there are so many perennial and annual weeds to control, our thanks goes to DIYmatters.co.uk for this vital resource.
Here are some photos of the gardening sessions and you can follow the project’s developments week by week on Judi's blog.
