Success Story: Valdemars Ziverts

Ziverts

Valdemars came to the Welcome Project in September 2011. He had held down a fairly secure job and was renting accomodation but as a result of losing all his documents was unable to prove his continuing right to live and work in the U.K. and lost his job. This was closely followed by the loss of his accomodation so when he came to us he was homeless, jobless, was unable to speak much English and could not access benefits.

Our support workers managed to arrange new documentation for him, got him access to benefits and secured him a rented room.

In the meantime Valdemars was working very hard in our Back to Work & Life Skills Programme as well as attending regular sessions of Enlgish Classes. He also attended two IT courses and received Certificates for both. However Valdemars desired a job as a Fork Lift Driver, which had been his employment in Latvia.

We helped him to access a Fork Lift Driver's Course at North London College so that he would be 'work proficient' in English. Valdemars completed and passed his course in September 2012 and has a number of job offers waiting for him.

Success Story: Harjit

HarjitMy life has taken a complete transformation over these past 3 months.
When I first came to the Welcome Centre, my life had hit rock bottom. My wife and I had separated. I was kicked out of my marital home and made homeless as a result of it.  Back then I was heavily into drugs. I was lonely scared, had no confidence, motivation or any self-belief. I was always angry and negative blaming others and everyone apart from myself. There was no one I could trust apart from myself. There was no one I could turn to for help and support.
My life turned around for the better when I came to the Welcome Centre. The support worker was my guardian angel when I first met her. She and the rest of the staff at the Welcome Centre took me under their wing and stood by me to help me get back on my feet. The support worker taught me to never lose faith, to always believe in myself and that I am unique and can achieve anything in my life…
Today I am a strong, confident and positively motivated human being. I believe in myself. I believe nothing is impossible. I have been clean and sober for the past 2 months. I have secured accommodation and I’m off the street thanks to the Welcome Centre.
Now I am in the process of starting full-time employment very soon. My relationship with my wife and family is getting stronger and better day by day. I deal with problems in a calmer, more mature manner rather than running away from them. I want to thank everyone in the Welcome Centre for helping me on the journey to becoming a positive, confident and strong human being.
Thank you all for believing in me and not giving up on me.
I am finally at a better place, standing on my own two feet because of all your help and support
Thank You,

Harjit.
